Stephen Higginson letters, [typescripts], 1798-1801.

Typescript copy of letters written by merchant Stephen Higginson, 22 June 1798- 23 March 1801, while he was a naval agent in Boston. Includes letters to Secretary of the Treasury Oliver Wolcott in Philadelphia and letters to and from the Navy Department in Washington, D.C., pertaining to Higginson's duties, such as the purchasing of ships and supplies; purchasing of material for the construction and repair of ships and buildings; acting as a liaison between the Navy and civilian contractors; and making recommendations regarding projects, contractors, sailors, and prisoners. Some originals located at the Connecticut Historical Society and some at the National Archives.

Stephen Higginson (November 28, 1743—November 28, 1828) was an American merchant and shipmaster from Boston, Massachusetts. Born in Salem in the Province of Massachusetts Bay, Higginson attended the common schools before engaging in mercantile pursuits; from 1765 to 1775, he was an active and successful shipmaster.
